Nutritionists often recommend eating white meat and avoiding red meat. Why are the beef and pork that used to be the staple of our cuisine now under censorship? Find out why red meat is considered less healthy.
According to many nutritionists, we need meat, but in small amounts and not every kind. Meat is a great source of protein and iron, but it is also high in unhealthy fat.
What meats are red and what are white?
The division of meat into white and red meat raises many doubts. Why do nutritionists classify turkey thigh as a white meat, even though it is dark in color? It turns out that nutritionists divide meat into white and red based on the content and type of fat.
The white meat is chicken and turkey without skin, veal, rabbit and ostrich – although it is dark in color. Red meats include: pork, beef, lamb, horse, duck and goose.
Why is red meat unhealthy?
Red meat contains much more fat than white meat, and what’s more, it’s mostly saturated fatty acids, which are not good for the body. Saturated fatty acids, when consumed in large amounts, cause atherosclerotic lesions that can lead to a heart attack or a stroke.
Statistics confirm that people who eat a lot of beef and pork are more likely to suffer from cardiovascular diseases, metabolic diseases and cancers (mainly of the anus and colon).
Those who cannot do without meat even a day are more likely to suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and macular degeneration. Meanwhile, unsaturated fatty acids – which are predominant in white meat – do the opposite: they protect the body against atherosclerotic changes.
There is no controversy about the negative effects of meat on the cardiovascular system. It is a product that we should eat rarely, as evidenced by the latest healthy eating pyramid.
Meat is a product rich mainly in complementary protein, containing a complete set of amino acids, which, however, can be obtained from plants. It is worth mentioning that it is difficult to obtain them from only one plant and you need to compose the diet in such a way as to supplement all the necessary nutrients. It is also worth remembering that meat is rich in saturated fat,
Recommendations of nutritionists
Nutritionists recommend that you eat white meat 2-3 times a week, and red meat only a few times a month, provided you are not overweight. Choose the best quality red meat, i.e. beef tenderloin or middle loin – they are the leanest.
Meat – grilled better
If someone likes meat and cannot eliminate it from the diet, remember to make it as least processed as possible. Avoid frying, long grilling, and replace them with sea fish, which are an excellent source of protein and healthy fats.
We often hear opinions that fish are cooked incorrectly, but let’s not discourage people from eating them. Eating fatty fish is preferable to eating red meat from land animals, and if you do choose, try to eat only lean meat that contains less fat. Unfortunately, no matter what the meat type, all of them contain too much cholesterol
